English as a Second Language Courses

Foundations of English I

Foundations of the English Language: I support the development of literacy in adolescents at the critical stage between decoding and deduction of meaning from the text. By teaching intensive reading and writing skills, deep practice groups, consistent formative feedback, graded reading levels, and helpful strategic advice, the course leads students to improve comprehension and handling of text.

The first chapter provides instruction in basic reading skills and vocabulary building. The student learns what a successful reader does in attacking words and sentences and extracting meaning from them. The second chapter provides instruction in basic writing skills, introduces academic tools, and demonstrates effective study skills. The student learns step-by-step processes to build effective paragraphs and learns how to use academic tools such as reference books and outlines. To provide additional support, the course uses textual features and visual guides to draw students’ attention to important information. The use of text features is also designed to help students grasp informational text comprehension strategies.

Characters appear throughout the instructions to provide tips and repair strategies in an authentic first-person and thinking out loud format. Their inclusion makes the reading processes that take place within the mind of the successful reader transparent. This additional cognitive support boosts students’ confidence and provides a model for process and perseverance.

Many internship opportunities are provided in the form of assessments that go from zero risk to low risk to high risk throughout the unit. This practice is structured around original, age-appropriate passages, written in an objective framework and using a structured and controlled vocabulary. The difficulty of these passages gradually increases from the reading level from the third to the fifth grade during the duration of the course. Additional support is provided by important formative feedback in practice and assessment.

This course guides students through the basic reading, writing, and academic skills necessary to prepare for success in academic coursework. At the end of the course, the student must be prepared for continued success in the academic world.
